What is AIS-140?
AIS-140 is a standard specified by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) that defines the technical requirements for a Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) and an emergency panic-button system. It covers things like how accurately the device must report location, how it detects tampering, and how an emergency alert reaches the right people.
It was introduced as part of a nationwide passenger-safety initiative, and state transport departments have progressively made certified VLTD fitment a condition for registering or renewing permits on mandated vehicle categories.
Which vehicles need it?
In most states, this applies to public service vehicles — buses, taxis and cabs, school and staff transport — and in a growing number of states, goods carriers as well. The exact scope and enforcement timeline is set at the state level, so the honest answer is: it depends on where your vehicle is registered and what category it falls under.
Personal, non-commercial vehicles are not covered by the mandate.
What happens if you don't comply?
In mandated states, RTOs treat certified VLTD fitment as a documented pre-requisite for permit issue, permit renewal, and fitness certificate renewal on the vehicle categories it covers. That means a non-compliant vehicle risks delays exactly when you need paperwork cleared quickly — a bad time to discover a gap.
